Primal Magic
Primal is a discipline, or school, of magic practiced by the residents of Zyrkthraan. It is characterized by its ability to manipulate the elements, such as fire, water, earth, and air.
Mechanics
Primal magic is created by manipulating adawe, an element that is present in all living things. Despite inanimate objects lacking adawe, they can be manipulated by it in certain capacities, such as the ability to create ice from one's hands. In order to use Primal magic, a person must study various spells, obtain magical instruments such as staves, or harness the innate power of foci, such as ritual objects. After one of these has been done, a person will be able to use the spell, instrument, or foci to create an effect. This effect takes the form of an element, such as shooting a fireball out of their hand or summoning a sudden rain.
Uses
Primal magic is mainly considered battle magic. Primal users can:
- Create fireballs, flame walls, and fire tornadoes
- Flood an area, create destructive waves in bodies of water, and create typhoons
- Form tornadoes, drive ships off-course, and fell tall structures
- Create sinkholes, earthquakes, or other hazardous terrain
While Primal is seemingly only focused on making destruction, it is not exclusively used for negative purposes. Primal users can also:
- Create rain to douse a fire or to water crops
- Use fire to create warmth or lighting
- Create wind to assist sailing endeavors or to expedite the movement of clouds
- Shape terrain to assist in infrastructure development or to create defensible portions of land
