Chichlin
Chichlin are arachnids that primarily live underground in colonies. They subsist on a carnivorous diet of insects, although they are large enough to eat small animals such as rats and toadclaws.
Habitat and Lifestyle
Chichlin can primarily be found on the continent of Hedaware. They live primarily in underground caverns, although they have been known to make their homes in abandoned structures above-ground.
They create nests by spinning silk filament around objects in their environment, such as cave walls, stones, and debris. They create uniquely shaped nests to hold the eggs of their young, which serve as nurseries and are not used by the adults.
They are known for their ability to manipulate small objects with their front four legs. They use this talent to move objects to facilitate their nest-building. They have been seen to solve small puzzles by using their front legs to move the pieces into the appropriate spots.
Chichlin are primarily skittish creatures. While they do hunt insects and animals that are smaller than them, they will avoid coming into contact with anything larger than them. If approached by a person, they will run away and either hide or group up with others. While this is the case, a group of chichlin will not be as cowardly. Chichlin in groups are more courageous and will work together to hunt larger animals or to defend themselves or their home from large invaders such as people.
Presence in Duuema Culture
The Duuema have a long history of utilizing arachnids for various purposes due to their natural intelligence and ability to manipulate small objects. After moving to Anhres and discovering the chichlin, the Kraginth clan was quick to begin farming the creatures. While most living chichlin were used for food, armor, and to produce silk, many autonomous machines made in their likeness were created to serve as assistants in various disciplines.

Monarch of the Lost: The Beginning
There are many instances in The Beginning where chichlin are mentioned, although living chichlin are not actually seen through the course of the story. However, two automalian chichlin are seen:
- In Chapter 7, when the automalian appears to fix the chair
- In Chapter 8, when Calen builds Calen Junior
- In Chapter 11, when Calen brings Calen Junior to Rhzoreck's home
- In Chapter 20, when Calen is using Calen Junior to help with cleaning up the home
- In the Epilogue, when Calen Junior helps Calen get into the library
