Background

Caliph was born to unknown parents deep within Mosswhisper territory. However, when he was still very young, he became separated from his family and was not found. Instead, he ended up venturing through the forest until he reached the border to Anhres. Here he came into contact with a local group of bandits, who, despite their violent nature, decided to take him in and teach him their ways. He soon became a valued member of their society and learned many things, including various methods of ending lives.

Eventually he grew out of the bandit life and wished for something more. He began traveling around to different cities and offering up his muscle for hire at local taverns. While he would occasionally get a good job that paid well for little effort, much of the work was all pain and no gain. It wasn't until one day, when he was relaxing in a tavern and waiting for work, when the scholar Amaeus came in and offered work. The other mercenaries were quick to dismiss the offer, as it was well-known that scholars promised big rewards but usually got themselves and their hired help in danger or even killed. Most of them believed that this scholar was no different than the others, and that he would hire one of them to do things that were difficult and not agree to pay them until after the work was finished.

Despite the warnings from the others, Caliph had run out of coin and desperately needed work. He responded to Amaeus' offer, only to be told that he would not need to do much at all. In fact, the only reason Amaeus needed assistance was so that he would have someone to carry his hefty supplies into areas, and carry his valuable artifacts out of areas. Although the job seemed too good to be true, with the scholar promising to pay all of his expenses and grant him a regular stipend for as long as he worked with him, he agreed to the position. Amaeus was true to his word and only rarely put the two of them in danger, with the vast majority of Caliph's work indeed being to carry things from one place to another. The most excitement the two would encounter would be other scholars, who were at times so aggressive that Caliph needed to set down their supplies and physically deal with them. By and large, though, he rarely needed to engage in anything too taxing.

The Harmonic Era

During the Harmonic Era, Caliph was vacationing with Amaeus in the city of Shitaovriki. He used this time to work with Calen and attempt to teach him to swing a sword. Although his efforts were in vain, Calen would still consider him a good friend.

The Realignment

During the Realignment, Caliph took a break from traveling with Amaeus to enter into a form of retirement. However, this only lasted for roughly 50 years before Amaeus called upon him again, expressing the need for them to set out and explore the world once more. He took no issue with this, and decided to follow the scholar once more.

The two ventured to many places, some they had already been to before, and learned many new things. At some point, Amaeus brought Caliph into Vouudakfel to watch the coronation of the new Duuema queen, Kalrha. Afterwards, the two were quick to be on their way, as Amaeus was determined to make it to an important Fjallmenn festival right away. They only barely arrived at that location before they were called back to Vouudakfel by Kalrha, who required Amaeus' assistance with a new crisis affecting her people.

Caliph was brought along for the ensuing adventure. His variety of skills enabled the group to borrow a ship to sail to Vinhia, where Amaeus was sure the next event would take place. Not long after arriving in Vinhia, the group was thrown into conflict with some invading Faren that sought to enslave the native Ethonians. Caliph was permitted to use his combat skills to help the group defeat the Faren and free the captives.

It was only a few days later when Caliph's skill in sailing was needed again. He sailed their boat from the mainland of Vinhia to the island of Nikoba. The group did what they came to do with little hassle, and then they were back on board the boat for Caliph to sail them elsewhere. Having finished in that land, it was decided that they would travel to Yaotlan, the homeland of the Faren, in order to return their new friend Selva to her city.
