Magic Ranks

Magic ranks are used to identify the skill level of any particular magic user. Ranks vary based on the type of magic being used, however this difference is only based on the overall form of magic, not specific disciplines.

Adawe-Based Magic

For adawe-based magic, such as Galawe and Galdhud, the ranks for each discipline are the same as every other.

From lowest to highest, they are:

  • Initiate
  • Adept
  • Mystic
  • Evoker
  • Archon
  • Magister
  • Sage
  • Elder
  • Paragon

Most cultures of Zyrkthraan use this hierarchy to describe the power of their magic users. For example, the Caeluvex society, which highly values magic use, base one's political power off of their magic rank. Someone like Dyrro Fioth, who holds the rank of Paragon, is considered someone of great power and prestige.

Harmonic Magic

The Duuema do not practice adawe-based magic. Instead, they practice Harmonics, a form of magic that does not require any adawe to perform. There are few ranks involved with their magic system as mastery of Harmonics requires time and dedication that most citizens cannot allocate.

From lowest to highest, they are:

  • Student
  • Apprentice
  • Assistant
  • Master
  • Lord Master

where one who has attained the rank of master is eligible to become a harmonic artificer, although most individuals will never reach such standing. The rank of lord master is just as improbable to obtain, as the requirements for that rank are extremely high. It is thought that only a handful of people have ever reached the rank of lord master, while there are usually eight individuals at any given time who hold the position of harmonic artificer. As such, it is much more likely for a dedicated user of harmonic magic to gain a position on the Harmonic Council as an artificer than for them to rise to the rank of lord master.

Other Magics

While other types of magic do exist, such as ritual magic, intention magic, and Celestial magic, a strict hierarchy does not seem to exist for any of them. By most accounts, all three of these types of magic work on a "can" vs "cannot" method, where any given user either "can" use that type of magic or they "cannot," even with schooling.
